Okay, in case you don't know... we DO have a newsbox HERE
, login to siteadmin
and configure it, or maybe I just need to make configuring it easier to use.
Ghastly wanted to know if I could make stats from it... so 2 hours later, we now have this
, albiet very ugly...
It's sole purpose is to track in/out on the newsbox... kinda like "top lists" , except this more tracks who is or is NOT putting the box on their site.
It's only been running for about 2 hours and is only showing "clicks" in this version. I might extend it a little to show counts instead of the same link over and over again. Still, I don't expect too much use of this one.
I might backport it to guide itself however, which means it could be used as a
page rank that could then be used on the front page.
Oh... and just a reminder, if you don't update your comic for 7 days, your newsbox will not show up. Some incentive to not go on hiatus.

Internet Explorer in WinXP SP2
This has severe implications on how the ads are displayed as well, basically if everyone gets SP2, then advertisers have to abandon the pop-up/pop-under/spyware model.
Monday, May 31st, 2004
Yes, the forums seem to be down, the server is not responding to pings, and I don't know what is responsible.
Thursday, April 1st, 2004
To install, put a ***newsbox*** tag on your page(s)
upload a 150x300 image to your site for the newxbox
Login to siteadmin.keenspace.com
setup the guide "banner" for it.
Then goto edit comicinfo and select the image from there.
then the next time your site "manually updates", the newsbox should be there +/- 24 hours.

Okay, signups have been online for one week, and heres some of the results:
a. Despite what I thought, there are not as many sprite comics applying (or getting through) as I thought there would be. That's GOOD.
b. However looks like the current trend is poorly drawn, or scan-and-post. Poorly drawn amounts to some scribbles that are not even legible. Scan-and-post is where someone scans something, anything and then uploads it, failing to resize, resample, or even rotate it so I don't have to tilt my head.
c. I'll be rejecting ALL sprite comics after March 5th if they do not clearly display a copyright notice on them indicating where the sprites are from. Fair use and education use of copyrighted materials requires this.
d. The same applies to any fanwork/fanfiction. Some people do not want people to create derivative works, unfortunately it's impossible to know every single copyrighted work known on earth. If you are using any material derived from another source, please cite the original source.

You should be able to FTP to your own sites and login to siteadmin.keenspace.com now, depending on how far DNS has gone. If you can't get siteadmin, try siteadmin2
Saturday, February 7th, 2004
Please FTP to butch.keenspot.com for now please

Okay the xfer is currently xfering the "T" section, so that leaves U, V W X Y and Z ... check guide.keenspace.com to see how many that is, probably less than 800 sites to move.
I still need to move YDK's stuff over (yes it's moving too) and turn the DB back on.
STuff IS going to be broken still. When FTP access is restored, upload anything missing. There shouldn't be anything missing, but since boardy was originally hitting drive errors, some files may have been trashed if they were accessed when boardy originally went down.
So POPULAR sites, check your front page and the first/last ends of the archives. I know there is at least ONE keenspace site that is going to be missing a file dated in the 2003's
Also because the members pages were also trashed, I'll be regenerating ALL of the member pages, so if you can't access yours, it's probably not regenerated yet. (future dating here... first thing is first, getting http running on butch.)
[update 8:25pm, feb 06]
FTP should be working, ftp to butch.keenspot.com for now, DNS needs to be resynced before you can ftp to your sites directly. This applies to BOTH former boardy and ydk users, as both machines accounts are being moved there. I'm going to try and trigger rebuilds of the boardy structure first, so YDK users will NOT be able to ftp at the moment.

Okay Boardy is online for web serving, but...
1. It's missing parts of members.keenspace.com
2. www.keenspace.com is missing
3. mysql is offline
4. ftp is offline
5. autokeen is offline.
And boardy keeps rebooting itself every so often or under heavy loads... so we are waiting for the large drives for Butch (butch.keenspot.com) to come in and everything will get moved over there.

Perhaps you are wondering why the cgi scripts stopped working on both servers and why FTP only still worked on YDK.
Simple answer, what do they all have in common.
I'm running checks on it and I'm going to try and locate the configuration setting that is causing this problem (caused by running out of connections, but really caused because the log file ran the partition out of space)

Get your signups in soon...
I'm going to be taking down the signup system around new years day so it can be overhauled again.
Unlike last time, I don't intend for it to be down for months.
Main reasons include:
1. Tonnes of unused comic sites on both Boardy and YDK
2. lots of one-shot-no-shows
3. People who changed their email addresses.
Sometime around this time, most keenspace users (that haven't updated in 30 days) should be getting an email along the lines of
"We noticed you haven't used your site recently..."
which will contain a choice of "Keep my site" or "Delete my site". This email will be primarily be to check which inactive comics still are around.
Update your email if you haven't, because if no response is recieved it will be deactivated if the site is deemed "unused"
I have a few other things planned, just to avoid deleting anyone that simply doesn't have that email, or their ISP is using spamhaus/spews and is blocking keenspace email (and all email from sagonet/unitedcolo)

Boardy - System Dead, technicians moved the hard drive to a new server and started it up and it's now back up and running. Please make sure you keep backups of your comic data.
YDK - No problems
Forums - Currently running a script to delete the dead/damaged post/threads with no post text.
Services (that run on the server)
dispatcher: operational, resuming where left off
guide_html: operational, behind (due to boardy being down)
webalizer: behind (due to boardy being down), updated on ydk but not in time for guide_html to process new lists.
SQL backend: Operational
Siteadmintest / Siteadmin2 : Known bugs still getting in the way, please use http://siteadmintest.keenspace.com/cgi-bin/check_status.cgi
to check login problems.
members (boardy) / members2 (YDK) : Operational

Work is underway to try(emphasis) to make a better version of utilities... specificly a different session management since too many people complain about needing a new password, when they simply haven't closed their browser before logging in.
This will let me get rid of a few annoyances and bugs in the existing version... the big one being a major desync between boardy and ydk that happens when everyone decides to do full updates... x_X
There will be some underlying changes, then hopefully the newsbox/forums editors will work.
I'm sorry, I can't manually add domains to keenspace in the current state, please disregard custom domain names untill further notice. I can manually add them, but they are almost as messy as adding forums, which the demand outstrips people available to add them.
The newer utilities should make things easier to configure, not hiding things like logs under the user page, and such.
Do people want to know how much their site costs/efficiency? A reasonable estimate can be generated by multiplying the current bandwidth in GB's by the price bandwidth costs (it costs anywhere between 70 cents and 3$ per GB, depending on the host.) This would be a reasonable guess for people considering KeenPRIME (or other hosting), as it would been extremely unreasonable to switch off KeenSPACE (which is free) to a paid hosting provider only to get hit with a big bill. Likewise, slashdot/farked effect can easily consume the same amount of bandwidth in one hour that would usually be consumed over the course of a month.

Don't ask how, but the servers managed to desync and were behind by quite a bit... I've fixed this, so passwords should be working for FTP again.
FYI, if your password works on siteadmintest/siteadmin2 but not FTP, wait a few minutes and then try FTP... if it doesn't work for like three days, then there is a problem.
Unfortunately, new accounts are getting trapped by the SPEWS.org system, so if you aren't getting e-mails anymore, this is why.

Status August 5th 2003
1. No e-mail, under investigation. This is mainly a problem with the forums and keenspot which are under the sagonet's original IP range. It doesn't appear to be affecting the UnitedColo IP range... at least I'm still getting e-mail from the YDK keenspace server.
2. No passwords
Keenspace accounts - You can now define a custom password, but it MUST be activated. The utility has been changed to report an error if it's already been activated.http://siteadmintest.keenspace.com/cgi-bin/lost_password.cgi
Keenspace FORUM accounts - You must define a custom password, or it will generate one at random. Untill the e-mail issue above is resolved, you have to use this utilityhttp://siteadmintest.keenspace.com/cgi-bin/lost_forumpassword.cgi
3. Can't login to members.keenspace.com ? Maybe it's because you are supposed to be using members2.keenspace.com.
If you aren't using http://siteadmintest.keenspace.com/cgi-bin/login.cgi
to login, you are doing it wrong. Going directly to the members page is only supported if you know what server your account is on.
Sorry, this is just a major issue that means people aren't following directions.
4. Can't FTP to your username.keenspace.com ? Are you sure you are FTP'ing to your USERNAME.keenspace.com and NOT FTP.keenspace.com ?
5. Not answering e-mail help@ ... This hasn't worked in almost a year, don't bother with it. Nobody has access to fix the server that it's on, nor does the server respond at all. So it's apparently just run clear out of disk space for e-mail... you can thank the spammers for that.
6. Can I use PHP or CGI? NO! I don't have time to verify CGI, and PHP is reserved for KeenPRIME.
7. What about domains? Working on it... I'm currently talking with Gav about the easiest way to let the users self-admin their domains without taking down all of keenspace/keenspot with a typo. Current Mood: accomplished

Please log into the correct server!!
I'm being hounded with "I can't login to FTP" or "I can't login to siteadmin"
1. You MUST ftp to your username.keenspace.com . I'm "this" close to having nate pull the ftp.keenspace.com dns name because people on YDK keep tying up boardy's FTP by ftping through ftp.keenspace.com.
1b) Don't use Internet Explorer for FTP, use smartFTP or CuteFTP or WS_FTP, it opens a new connection to the FTP server every time you do anything.
2. Don't request a new password over and over and over, if you are doing this, chances are you aren't closing your browser entirely before logging in. You absolutely have to close all browsers if you can't log in. As I have stated before, this is a bug in IE. It doesn't appear to be present in Mozilla (which follows the cookie standard... meh okay I had them fix it in Mozilla which wasn't following it's own cookie standard.)It works properly in Opera... and funny enough, Pocket IE on PocketPC's.
Keenspace servers have been relocated to sagonet in california, however the CoLo seems to have been very hasty with moving them, not giving us a chance to back them up, and it appears they didn't even shut them down right, as there were errors in the DB, (which may have disabled FTP for a good portion of the day)
The NFS link between boardy and ydk is currently down, and I don't plan on bringing it back up right away as to try and get more people to FTP to the right server.
If you have an account created before June 1st 2003, your FTP server login MUST SAY:
if it was after June 1st 2003, it must say:
If it does not match, you are not logging into the right server. If you keep losing connections, or refused connections, this is why.
